The Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has restrained the state government, the Emiolu Ruling House and kingmakers from nominating or appointing a parallel Aresaadu of Iresaadu in Surulere Local Government Area.
Justice K.A. Adedokun granted the interim injunction in Suit No. HOI/6/2026, directing that no candidate should be nominated, appointed or approved for the Aresaadu chieftaincy pending the hearing and final determination of the case.
The order followed an application by Oba Adeyeye, who is challenging moves to begin a fresh process for the appointment of another monarch while he remains on the throne.
Oba Adeyeye said the move by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters to initiate a new nomination process was contrary to previous court judgments and orders recognising his appointment.
According to him, he was nominated by the Osunbiyi Ruling House, approved by the kingmakers and appointed by the Oyo State Government in 2019. He said a subsequent suit by the Emiolu Ruling House challenging his appointment was dismissed, while an appeal was later withdrawn.
The monarch also claimed that a 2021 court judgment directed the government to recognise him as the substantive Aresaadu and release his entitlements.
The latest court order restrains all parties from taking further steps towards appointing another Aresaadu until the matter is determined.
