Oyo Government Rejects MURIC’s Allegation That Makinde Is Anti-Islam

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has opposed the reported endorsement of Bimbo Adekanmbi as Governor Seyi Makinde’s preferred successor in the 2027 Oyo State governorship election, insisting that the next governor should be a Muslim.

The organisation argued that allowing another Christian to succeed Makinde, who is also a Christian and would have completed eight years in office, would amount to religious imbalance in the state’s political leadership.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC accused the governor of favouring Christians in the distribution of government benefits while allegedly neglecting Muslims.

The group maintained that there is an unwritten power-sharing arrangement in Yorubaland under which Christians and Muslims should alternate in occupying governorship positions.

It insisted that since Makinde, a Christian, would have served two terms, the governorship should return to a Muslim in 2027.

MURIC also called on Muslim leaders in Oyo State to resist what it described as an attempt to impose a Christian successor, urging political parties in the South-West to consider Muslim governorship candidates.

The organisation further expressed concern that all six states in the South-West are currently governed by Christians, describing the situation as a concern for religious representation in the region.

However, the group did not provide details of the alleged discriminatory government policies in the statement, but warned that the issue of political representation should be addressed ahead of the 2027 elections.
