The Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures, suspend late-night activities, and prioritise fencing of church premises in response to growing security concerns.

The directive was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi.

According to the association, churches should become more security-conscious by deploying trained security personnel and installing electronic surveillance devices within their premises and surrounding areas.

CAN also advised churches to suspend late physical activities and intensify prayers for victims of abduction and kidnapping across the state.

The association urged churches without perimeter fences and gates to make such projects a priority, while directing church leaders to ensure that trained security personnel are on duty during worship services and other church programmes.

It further called for security assessments of guards and other personnel engaged in essential services and warned against allowing strangers to sleep within church premises.

The body advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the current security challenges, particularly late-night journeys, and encouraged compliance with the state government’s restriction on commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m.

Expressing concern over the rising cases of kidnapping and abduction, CAN sympathised with affected families and commended efforts by the Oyo State and Federal Governments to secure the release of victims.

The association specifically acknowledged ongoing efforts to address recent abduction incidents in parts of the state and urged authorities to intensify actions aimed at securing the freedom of those still in captivity.

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government to promote peace, unity, and stability across Oyo State.
