Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents of Fowowawo, Ajerogun, and Magbon-Etido communities in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State following a failed abduction attempt that claimed the lives of at least six people.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, has forced many residents to abandon their homes and businesses amid fears of further attacks by armed criminals.
A visit to the affected communities revealed a tense atmosphere, with many houses locked and deserted. Several shops remained closed, while commercial and social activities were significantly reduced as residents struggled to come to terms with the tragic event.
The attack reportedly targeted a dredging site in the area, where suspected kidnappers attempted to abduct a Chinese national working at the facility. However, the operation was unsuccessful after security operatives and local security groups responded to the scene.
The confrontation that followed turned deadly, resulting in the deaths of six people, including a soldier, a local hunter, and four other individuals. Security authorities also confirmed that one of the suspected kidnappers was killed during an exchange of gunfire with security personnel.
The aftermath of the attack has left many residents living in fear, with concerns that the armed gang could return to carry out another operation. As a result, some families have temporarily relocated to safer areas, while others remain indoors and avoid unnecessary movement.
Residents expressed frustration over the growing security challenges facing the communities, noting that criminal activities have become a recurring concern in the area. Many recalled a previous kidnapping incident that occurred several years ago, during which victims were reportedly held captive until ransom payments were made.
Community members also highlighted the poor state of infrastructure, particularly the road linking the affected settlements to Ofada, where the nearest police facility is located. According to residents, the deteriorating condition of the road makes access difficult for security personnel and emergency responders, especially during critical situations.
One resident who claimed to have participated in the initial response to the attack narrated how local hunters were alerted after reports of gunfire around the dredging site.
According to him, information initially reaching the community suggested that a dispute had broken out among workers at the site. Acting on the information, local hunters and other community members mobilised to investigate the situation.
However, upon arriving at the location, they reportedly discovered that the area had been infiltrated by armed kidnappers. Unaware of the danger ahead, they found themselves in close proximity to the gunmen before realising they had walked into a carefully planned ambush.
The resident explained that one of the local security volunteers fired a warning shot into the air to alert his colleagues after noticing suspicious movements. The gunmen immediately responded with heavy gunfire, triggering panic and confusion.
The exchange of gunshots forced many of the responders to flee for safety, while others attempted to resist the attackers. During the confrontation, one of the local security volunteers was fatally struck by bullets fired by the gunmen.
Survivors described the incident as terrifying, noting that they had little opportunity to defend themselves against the heavily armed attackers. Some escaped through nearby bushes and waterways as the sound of gunfire echoed across the community.
Following the incident, security operatives intensified surveillance and patrols in the area while investigations continued to track down the fleeing suspects. Residents have called for a stronger security presence, improved intelligence gathering, and urgent intervention by the government to prevent future attacks.
Community leaders have also appealed for the rehabilitation of access roads and the establishment of additional security posts to enhance response times during emergencies.
As fear continues to spread across the affected communities, many residents remain hopeful that increased security measures will restore confidence and allow displaced families to return to their homes without fear of further attacks.
