Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has called for the declaration of a security emergency to address the worsening insecurity across the country.
In a statement issued through his media office, Atiku expressed concern over the increasing attacks by terrorists and bandits, particularly those targeting educational institutions.
Reacting to the recent attack on Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Atiku lamented the loss of lives and the abduction of students, describing the trend as a serious threat to the nation’s future.
He noted that repeated attacks on schools appear to follow a disturbing pattern aimed at disrupting education and hindering national development.
According to him, the continued targeting of students, teachers, and educational facilities poses a grave danger to the country’s human capital development and requires urgent action from government authorities.
The former Vice President urged the Federal Government to declare a security emergency that would provide security commanders with greater operational flexibility to confront criminal elements more effectively.
He clarified that his proposal does not involve the removal of elected officials but is intended to empower security personnel to make critical battlefield decisions without undue political interference.
Atiku stressed the need for decisive measures to combat terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, warning that continued attacks on schools could have long-term consequences for education and national development.
He called on the authorities to strengthen security operations and take proactive steps to protect lives, communities, and educational institutions across the country.
