The first batch of Nigerians being repatriated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks is expected to arrive in Lagos on Thursday morning.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Tuesday.
According to the ministry, the returnees will be airlifted aboard an Air Peace flight scheduled to depart O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
The aircraft is expected to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Thursday.
The evacuation exercise comes amid growing concerns over reported xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, with many Nigerians expressing fears over their safety and security.
The Federal Government had earlier reassured Nigerians residing in South Africa of its commitment to protecting their welfare and ensuring their safe return where necessary.
Authorities said the repatriation effort forms part of ongoing measures to assist affected citizens while diplomatic engagements continue with South African authorities to address the situation and prevent further attacks.
Government officials are expected to receive the returnees upon arrival and provide necessary support as part of the reintegration process.
Further details regarding the number of returnees and subsequent evacuation plans are expected to be announced by the relevant authorities.
