An Ogun State Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, has convicted and sentenced eight individuals for indiscriminate disposal of waste in parts of the state capital.
The offenders were prosecuted by the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) on charges related to illegal waste disposal and violations of the state’s public health and environmental sanitation laws.
According to the prosecution, the offenders were arrested during an enforcement operation after they were caught dumping refuse on public roads in the Isale-Igbein, Car-Wash and Abiola Way areas of Abeokuta.
The court heard that the illegal dumping of waste posed serious environmental and public health risks, including offensive odours, the breeding of disease-carrying insects, and the potential for flooding.
In its judgment, the court found all the defendants guilty and sentenced them to community service within the court premises. It also warned that any repeat offence would attract a custodial sentence without the option of a fine.
Reacting to the judgment, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority commended the court’s decision, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening environmental law enforcement in the state.
The agency reiterated its commitment to intensifying monitoring and enforcement activities and urged residents to dispose of waste through approved waste management operators, warning that anyone found violating environmental sanitation laws would be prosecuted.
