NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja Dies at 60

The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Emmanuel Ugboaja, has died at the age of 60 after a prolonged illness.

NLC President Joe Ajaero announced Ugboaja’s death to members of the Congress National Executive Council during their meeting in Enugu on Thursday.

Ugboaja, a lawyer and veteran trade unionist, had served as NLC General Secretary since 2019, where he played a key role in negotiations with government and employers over workers’ wages and welfare.

His tenure included major labour engagements over the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage and subsequent campaigns for improved workers’ welfare.

Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja studied Law at the University of Calabar and joined the trade union movement in 1993.

The NLC is expected to release further details on his death and funeral arrangements.
