The Oyo State Government has alerted residents across the state’s 33 Local Government Areas to the heightened risk of flash flooding in June 2026 following forecasts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The warning was issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, who urged residents to take precautionary measures as the rainy season intensifies.

According to the commissioner, high-intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff expected during the month could lead to temporary road overflows and flooding in several communities across the state.

Aderinto disclosed that the government has intensified the clearing of critical drainage channels to reduce the impact of flooding but emphasized that residents also have a responsibility to keep drains, gutters, and waterways free of waste materials that could obstruct the flow of water.

He specifically advised residents to remove plastic bottles, silt, and other debris from drainage systems around their homes and communities to prevent blockages that could worsen flooding.

The commissioner also cautioned motorists and pedestrians against driving or walking through flooded roads, especially at night, noting that flash floods can be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and individuals.

As part of efforts to safeguard lives and property, Aderinto warned individuals and property developers against unauthorized dredging and construction activities that alter natural water channels or block drainage routes.

He stressed that such actions violate the state’s environmental laws and would attract appropriate sanctions.

Residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas were advised to take proactive safety measures, including moving valuable household items, important documents, and electrical appliances to elevated positions above floor level.

The commissioner further urged parents and guardians to keep children and other vulnerable persons indoors during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce the risk of accidents and exposure to flood-related dangers.

Aderinto assured residents that the state government has activated emergency response and contingency plans to respond swiftly to any flooding incidents that may occur.

He called on the public to remain calm, vigilant, and safety-conscious throughout the rainy season while supporting government efforts aimed at protecting lives and property across the state.
