Despite a heavy downpour, protesters on Monday took to the streets of Ibadan to demand urgent government intervention over rising insecurity and the growing threat posed by kidnappers and other criminal elements across Oyo State.
The demonstrators, operating under a civil society platform, gathered in the early hours of the day before embarking on a peaceful march through major parts of the state capital. Undeterred by the persistent rainfall, the protesters said the worsening security situation required immediate attention and could no longer be ignored.
Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the participants called on authorities at all levels to strengthen security measures, protect communities, and intensify efforts to combat kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes. The protesters stressed that the safety of citizens should remain a top priority, especially in rural communities where residents often face security challenges.
As the procession moved through the city, demonstrators displayed messages demanding safer roads, secure communities, and better protection for students, farmers, traders, and other vulnerable groups. Many of them argued that insecurity has continued to affect daily life, creating fear among residents and disrupting economic and social activities.
According to the protesters, recent security incidents have heightened public anxiety, with many families expressing concern about the safety of their loved ones. They noted that the increasing cases of abductions and violent attacks have left many communities living in fear and uncertainty.
The group emphasized that their demonstration was aimed at drawing attention to the urgent need for stronger action against criminal activities. They urged security agencies to improve surveillance, strengthen intelligence gathering, and ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.
Several participants described the protest as a civic responsibility, insisting that citizens must continue to raise their voices on issues affecting public safety and national development. They maintained that peaceful advocacy remains an important tool for encouraging government accountability and promoting positive change.
The protesters also called for enhanced security presence in vulnerable areas, improved protection for educational institutions, and the deployment of additional resources to communities facing persistent security threats. They argued that safeguarding schools and ensuring the safety of children should be treated as a matter of national importance.
While the rain continued throughout the demonstration, participants remained resolute, saying that the difficult weather conditions reflected the determination of citizens to seek lasting solutions to the security challenges confronting the state and the country at large.
The peaceful protest concluded with renewed calls for urgent action, as demonstrators appealed to government officials and security agencies to work collaboratively toward restoring public confidence, protecting lives and property, and creating a safer environment for all residents.
Participants expressed hope that their message would lead to concrete measures capable of addressing insecurity and ensuring that communities across Oyo State can once again live, work, and pursue their daily activities without fear.
