The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media and falsely linked to the recent abduction of school children and teachers in Oyo State, describing the footage as misleading and unrelated to the incident.
According to the police, preliminary findings showed that the video did not originate from Nigeria and was being deliberately shared online to create fear and confusion among members of the public. Authorities warned that the spread of unverified content, especially during sensitive security situations, could trigger unnecessary panic and undermine ongoing rescue operations.
The Force urged Nigerians to avoid sharing misleading materials on social media and instead rely on verified information from official security channels. It stressed that misinformation has the potential to complicate security efforts and distract agencies working to secure the safe release of victims.
Meanwhile, the police disclosed that security measures have been intensified following the abduction, with additional operatives and intelligence personnel deployed to support search-and-rescue operations. The authorities stated that all available resources were being mobilised to ensure the victims are rescued safely and those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
Security agencies also appealed to residents in affected communities to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations and rescue efforts. The police reassured the public of their commitment to restoring safety and maintaining law and order in the affected areas.
The viral circulation of false content surrounding the incident has continued to draw concern from authorities, who insist that accurate information sharing is essential in preventing fear and protecting the integrity of security operations.
