The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has called on South-West leaders and stakeholders to take urgent steps to address rising insecurity following the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State.
Speaking during a television interview on Tuesday, Adams described the attack in Oriire Local Government Area as disturbing and highly condemnable.
He said the mass abduction in Yorubaland was a serious warning sign that the region must prepare to confront growing security threats.
According to him, kidnappings had occurred in different parts of the country, but the recent attack in Oyo State showed that criminal elements were gradually infiltrating the South-West.
Adams disclosed that he had previously raised concerns about insecurity in states including Ondo, Ekiti, Osun and Oyo, while also calling for stronger collaboration among South-West governors and security stakeholders.
He stated that despite repeated appeals and public warnings, there had been little response to his calls for coordinated action on regional security.
The Yoruba leader stressed the need for traditional institutions, security groups and governments to work together to tackle insecurity across the region.
Last Friday, armed bandits invaded the Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting students, pupils and staff members from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and LGEA Primary School.
