Aleshinloye Market Traders Cry Out Over Alleged Demolition Plan, Seek Makinde’s Intervention

Tension is mounting at Aleshinloye Market as hundreds of traders express deep concern over a proposed demolition said to be planned by the Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, Tajudeen Adigun Adeniyi, popularly known as ATU. The development has triggered widespread anxiety among business owners, many of whom fear losing their primary source of livelihood.

Describing the move as a direct threat to their survival, affected traders have appealed to Seyi Makinde, urging immediate intervention. They warn that any forceful eviction could have devastating economic consequences for thousands of families who depend on the market for daily income.

The traders’ position was formally presented in a petition filed by Chief (Barrister) Olawale Ojoge-Daniel, representing the Ojoge-Daniel Foundation for Human Rights and Conflict Mediation. The petition argues that the proposed demolition constitutes a violation of their constitutional rights, particularly in light of existing tenancy agreements held by many shop owners.

Public concern intensified on Monday when several traders took their grievances to the airwaves on Almond FM 94.3. During live interviews, market men and women shared emotional accounts of uncertainty and distress, insisting that the planned action lacks legal backing and would unjustly displace thousands without due process.

Central to their argument is the claim that many traders possess valid tenancy agreements running as far as 2028 and 2030. They maintain that terminating such agreements through administrative action, rather than lawful procedures, amounts to an illegal act. According to them, due process must be followed in any matter relating to tenancy termination.

The situation is further complicated by the market’s recent history, with traders still grappling with the aftermath of previous fire outbreaks and partial demolitions. Community leaders warn that proceeding with the demolition under the current circumstances could escalate tensions and disrupt public order, given the market’s role as a major economic hub in Ibadan.

In their appeal, the legal representative called on Governor Makinde to act in line with constitutional provisions that prioritize the welfare and security of citizens. He urged the state government to halt any planned demolition and ensure that the rights of traders are respected and protected.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Ibadan South West Local Government authorities regarding the allegations. Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to grip the market, with traders determined to defend their businesses as they await a clear directive from the state government.
