President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to screen and confirm the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma as Minister of Housing and Urban Development.

The request was conveyed in an official communication to the Senate and presented during plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. Following the reading of the letter, the nomination was referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration, in line with legislative procedures for ministerial appointments.

In a separate correspondence, the President also sought legislative approval for the appointment of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. This nomination was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, which has been mandated to conduct a detailed review and report back within one week.

Additionally, the President requested the confirmation of Benedict Umeno for reappointment as a member of the Code of Conduct Bureau, representing the South-East geopolitical zone. This nomination was directed to the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption, also given a one-week timeline to submit its findings.

Muttaqha Rabe Darma, the ministerial nominee, holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bayero University Kano. He has previously been active in the political landscape, having served as a deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party. His political journey has included notable developments, reflecting his engagement in party activities and alliances.

Lamido Abubakar Yuguda, on the other hand, brings extensive experience in the financial sector. He previously served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria and has spent more than three decades working within the Central Bank of Nigeria. His nomination is seen as a move to further strengthen the leadership and technical expertise within the apex bank.

The nominations and reappointment request underscore ongoing efforts by the executive arm to fill key positions across government institutions, particularly in sectors critical to economic management, financial regulation, housing development, and governance.

The Senate is expected to carry out its constitutional responsibility of screening the nominees, assessing their qualifications, experience, and suitability for the roles, before making final decisions on their confirmation. The outcome of the screening process will determine the next steps in their respective appointments, as the administration continues to shape its governance structure.
