The Nigerian Army has assured the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of adequate security support ahead of the 2027 general elections in Kaduna State, pledging to protect the electoral process while maintaining political neutrality.

The General Officer Commanding, 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Abubakar Sadique Muhammad Wase, gave the assurance on Wednesday when the Acting Resident Electoral Commissioner, Abba Yahaya, visited the division’s headquarters in Kaduna.

Wase said the Army remained committed to supporting civil institutions in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities, adding that troops would maintain professionalism and focus on providing outer-perimeter security during the elections.

He also assured INEC that security arrangements had made all local government areas in Kaduna State accessible and safe for the conduct of the polls.

The Army chief urged the commission to intensify voter education and ensure that its ad hoc staff understood the responsibilities of the various security agencies deployed for election duties, noting that this would improve coordination and prevent operational misunderstandings.

Earlier, Yahaya said the visit was part of INEC’s engagement with key stakeholders as preparations for the 2027 elections gathered momentum. He commended the existing relationship between the commission and security agencies and called for stronger collaboration to ensure peaceful and credible elections.

The assurance comes amid efforts by stakeholders in Kaduna State to strengthen election security. Political parties in the state had earlier signed a peace accord, pledging to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the elections.
