INEC Warns Against Abusive Campaign Language Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against abusive, inflammatory and threatening language during campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.

INEC said violations of the Electoral Act 2026 could attract sanctions, including a fine of up to ₦10 million and a jail term of up to 12 months.

The Electoral Act prohibits abusive, slanderous and provocative language, as well as campaign messages that target ethnic, religious, tribal or sectional sentiments.

The law also prohibits the use or threat of force, violence or intimidation to influence voters or prevent electoral support.

INEC’s warning comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. The commission is expected to enforce the provisions against any candidate, party or supporter found violating the law.

The commission has also stressed the need for campaigns to be conducted peacefully and within the provisions of the law, allowing voters to make their choices without intimidation or violence.
