The Movement for Credible Elections has commenced discussions with opposition parties and presidential candidates as part of efforts to explore a single opposition candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The Prof. Pat Utomi-led Political Commission of the MCE said the engagements would involve the Social Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Accord Party, Peoples Redemption Party, African Action Congress and Young Progressive Party.
The group said the closed-door meetings were intended to allow the parties and candidates to discuss the proposed alliance without external interference.
MCE said the discussions would be followed by a tactical session in Ibadan in about two weeks. It added that participating candidates and parties would be expected to commit to respecting the outcome of the process and supporting the candidate eventually adopted by the coalition.
Meanwhile, a group within the All Progressives Congress, BTO4PBAT, has criticised the proposed alliance between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
The group argued that combining the support bases of the two opposition figures would not automatically translate into electoral victory, citing differences in political interests, leadership and organisational structures.
BTO4PBAT also pointed to the APC’s existing political structures and incumbency advantage, while stating that it would campaign for President Bola Tinubu based on the administration’s record of governance and delivery.
MCE, however, said the success of any opposition coalition would depend on the credibility, transparency, fairness and due process used in selecting its presidential candidate.
The movement urged all participating parties and candidates to approach the discussions with an open mind and place the electoral process above individual interests.
