The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that Nigeria’s voter register has surpassed 100 million ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has renewed attention on voter turnout, which has declined significantly in recent general elections despite growth in the number of registered voters.
Available figures show that turnout stood at 69 per cent in 2003 but fell to 57 per cent in 2007, 54 per cent in 2011, 44 per cent in 2015, 35 per cent in 2019 and 27 per cent in the 2023 presidential election.
The development has raised concerns about the gap between voter registration and actual participation at elections.
INEC is expected to sustain efforts to improve voter access, including the collection of Permanent Voter Cards, while strengthening the use of technology, logistics and other measures aimed at improving the electoral process.
Recent governorship elections in states including Ekiti and Osun have also drawn attention to the importance of election security, technology and public participation.
For the 2027 elections, stakeholders including INEC, security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations and voters will have roles to play in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
Voter education and public awareness are also expected to remain important as citizens are encouraged to participate in the electoral process.
The 2027 elections will provide an opportunity to assess whether the growth in Nigeria’s registered voter population translates into higher participation at the polls.
