The United Kingdom has awarded Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 68 Nigerians to pursue master’s and PhD programmes in the country.

The beneficiaries were honoured at pre-departure ceremonies held in Abuja and Lagos on Wednesday.

Twelve Nigerians received Chevening scholarships, while 56 were awarded Commonwealth scholarships.

Speaking at the Abuja ceremony, Chargée d’Affaires at the British High Commission, Vicky Seymour, congratulated the scholars and described the awards as an investment in both the beneficiaries and Nigeria’s future.

She urged them to return to Nigeria after their studies and apply their knowledge and experience to national development.

A Chevening scholar, Sarah Yanayork, who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex, said the scholarship represented the culmination of years of perseverance and would help her contribute to good governance and inclusive development.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth scholar Abubakar Umar, who will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter, described the award as particularly significant to him as a person with hearing impairment.

The UK said Nigeria currently has more than 5,237 Chevening and Commonwealth alumni who have contributed to national development.
