FG Pays Academic Tools Allowance to Lecturers

The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for January to August 2026.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday, saying the payment was in line with the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Alausa said all affected institutions had been notified to commence payment of the allowance to academic staff.

He explained that CATA is designed to support lecturers in purchasing essential tools and materials needed for teaching, research and other academic activities.

The minister added that payment to non-academic staff was also being processed and could be released in the coming weeks.

Alausa said the payment reflects the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of staff in tertiary institutions, while also investing in infrastructure and other areas of the education sector.
