The Federal Government has directed ministers, heads of ministries, departments and agencies, and other government appointees to obtain prior approval from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation before embarking on official foreign trips.
The directive was contained in a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also been directed to make evidence of valid OSGF approval mandatory when processing official, diplomatic and service visas for government appointees travelling on official assignments.
The government said the measure is aimed at improving accountability, fiscal discipline, transparency and coordination of official foreign engagements.
The Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation will verify compliance during audit exercises, while expenses incurred on unauthorised foreign trips will be subject to scrutiny.
Accounting officers, permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies have also been directed not to process expenditure for official foreign travel unless the required approval has been obtained.
The directive takes immediate effect.
