The Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has revised the 2025/2026 academic calendar for public primary and secondary schools, confirming that classes will resume on Monday, July 6, 2026.

The adjustment was announced in a circular dated July 2, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. B.T. Oyinloye. According to the circular, schools are expected to reopen on July 6 to continue the current academic session.

The ministry stated that the resumed academic term will last for six weeks and end on Friday, August 14, 2026.

Following the completion of the term, students and teachers will proceed on a four-week holiday beginning Monday, August 17, and ending Friday, September 11, 2026.

The revised calendar also sets Monday, September 14, 2026, as the official resumption date for the first term of the 2026/2027 academic session.

The changes apply to all public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State and form part of the government’s efforts to adjust the academic calendar following the disruption caused by the recent strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

The strike, which began on June 1, 2026, led to the closure of public schools across the state after the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. The industrial action was suspended after discussions between the union and the Oyo State Government.

NUT President Titus Amba said the decision to return to classrooms was made in the interest of students, particularly younger pupils who had remained out of school during the strike.

The industrial action was triggered by an attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, during which armed men abducted teachers and pupils and reportedly killed two teachers. The incident sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for stronger security measures to safeguard schools and ensure the safety of students and education workers.
