The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has warned masquerades and their followers against engaging in any form of violence during this year’s Egungun Festival, which commenced in Ibadan on Monday.

In a statement issued by his Chief Spokesman, Chief Adeola Oloko, the monarch stressed that the annual cultural celebration should not be used as a platform for violence, retaliation, or supremacy battles, warning that anyone found engaging in violent acts would face the full weight of the law.

Oba Ladoja described the Egungun Festival as one of the enduring cultural traditions of the people of Ibadan, dedicated to preserving and celebrating their customs, heritage, and values.

According to the monarch, the festival promotes social harmony, strengthens family ties, and fosters communal unity through traditional rites and cultural activities. He added that it also provides an opportunity for residents to reflect on their history while celebrating their collective achievements through drumming, dancing, and other cultural performances.

The traditional ruler emphasized that the festival should remain peaceful and retain its cultural significance.

He assured residents that the palace had made adequate arrangements to ensure a smooth and hitch-free celebration.

Oba Ladoja also urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies and comply with directives on designated routes and approved times for masquerade processions to ensure peace, safety, and order throughout the festival.
