The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnic and Higher Technical Education has ordered the Federal Ministry of Education to submit all records on the implementation of the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training programme by August 18, 2026.
The committee also gave the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, a final invitation to appear personally before lawmakers on September 17, 2026, to explain the implementation of the programme.
The resolutions were reached on Thursday during an investigative hearing at the National Assembly following the minister’s repeated failure to honour invitations from the committee.
Chairman of the committee, Fuad Kayode Laguda, said lawmakers had been requesting information on the TVET programme since January 30, 2025, but the ministry had failed to provide the requested documents.
He said the latest invitation, issued on July 30, was also not honoured by the minister or any representative of the ministry.
Laguda reminded the ministry that Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution empower the National Assembly to investigate the activities of ministries, departments and agencies.
Some lawmakers criticised the minister’s absence, with Rabiu Yusuf describing it as disrespectful to the legislature and calling for a possible vote of no confidence.
Another member, Bayo Adepoju, described the development as a direct affront to Parliament and said Nigerians deserved transparency over the implementation of the TVET programme.
However, other lawmakers urged restraint and called for the minister to be given another opportunity to appear before any further action is taken.
The committee subsequently directed the Ministry of Education to submit all documents and information relating to the TVET programme, from inception to date, by August 18.
It also fixed September 17 for another hearing and expressed hope that the minister would appear in person.
The committee said the records would help lawmakers assess the implementation of the TVET programme and ensure accountability in the management of funds allocated to technical and vocational education.
