The House of Representatives has announced plans to vote on a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state and local police as part of efforts to tackle rising insecurity across the country.
Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Benjamin Kalu, disclosed this during a media briefing shortly after plenary.
According to Kalu, the House has resolved to prioritise consideration of the state police proposal ahead of other constitutional amendment bills due to the growing security challenges facing the nation.
He revealed that lawmakers currently outside Abuja on oversight assignments have been directed to suspend such engagements and return to the National Assembly ahead of the scheduled voting process.
The proposed legislation is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker alongside 14 other members of the House of Representatives.
The move is part of ongoing constitutional review efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and addressing concerns over the effectiveness of existing policing structures in combating crime and insecurity across the country.
