President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday inaugurated the main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX), linking Ring Road 1 Junction to Ring Road 2 Junction in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the ceremony, the President described the project as a key component of the administration’s efforts to expand infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in the nation’s capital.
Tinubu stated that his administration remains committed to delivering projects that bring visible improvements to the lives of Nigerians, emphasizing that governance should produce tangible results.
According to him, infrastructure development plays a critical role in economic growth, job creation, and improving the quality of life for citizens. He noted that investments in roads and transportation networks help unlock the economic potential of cities and communities.
The President recalled earlier phases of the Outer Southern Expressway project, including the inauguration of the first section from the Villa Roundabout to Ring Road 1 Junction and the subsequent opening of the 15-kilometre left-hand service carriageway.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to completing ongoing projects across the country, stressing that government initiatives should be carried through to completion rather than abandoned.
Tinubu explained that the latest phase of the expressway would enhance connectivity within Abuja, reduce traffic congestion, improve mobility, and support economic activities across the Federal Capital Territory.
He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his role in driving infrastructure development and ensuring the timely delivery of projects.
According to the President, the completed road will ease movement for commuters, reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and improve access to emerging development corridors within the capital city.
He also acknowledged the contributions of engineers, construction workers, and host communities whose efforts contributed to the successful completion of the project.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development nationwide, Tinubu assured Nigerians that investments in critical sectors would continue across all regions of the country.
Speaking at the event, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike disclosed that the project was awarded to construction firm CGC between October and November of the previous year. He noted that despite the scale of work involved, including the construction of culverts and bridges, the contractor successfully delivered the project within the agreed timeline.
Wike stated that he regularly inspected the project to monitor progress and ensure compliance with delivery targets, expressing satisfaction with the contractor’s performance.
The minister also highlighted efforts to provide improved infrastructure for traders relocated from the Apo Mechanic Village, noting that facilities such as access roads and water supply had been provided at the new site.
He emphasized the importance of continuity in governance, stating that many of the projects completed under the current administration were inherited from previous governments and brought to completion rather than abandoned.
According to Wike, the administration has demonstrated a commitment to sustaining and completing inherited projects while also initiating new ones aimed at improving the living conditions of residents.
He further revealed that infrastructure development activities would continue across satellite towns and communities within the FCT, including road and water projects in areas such as Kwali, Karu, Kubwa, and other surrounding districts.
The minister added that the ongoing development efforts reflect a broader strategy to ensure that infrastructure investments benefit residents across the entire Federal Capital Territory rather than being concentrated solely within the city centre.
