The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has expressed concern over the worsening security situation across the country, calling on the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive measures to safeguard lives and property.

In a statement issued by its Secretary General, Nafi’u Baba-Ahmad, the council noted that Nigerians continue to grapple with killings, kidnappings, terrorist attacks, banditry, and other violent crimes despite repeated assurances from authorities.

The council described the situation as alarming, citing recent attacks and mass abductions in several parts of the country as evidence that many communities remain vulnerable after years of insecurity.

According to the group, numerous incidents of violence go unreported, while available reports indicate that thousands of people have been killed, abducted, or displaced in recent months.

The council stated that behind every casualty figure is a human story involving lives lost, families left grieving, and communities forced to live in fear and uncertainty.

It also expressed disappointment that repeated appeals by citizens, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organisations for stronger government intervention have not yielded significant results.

The council stressed that Nigerians are increasingly demanding concrete action rather than assurances, noting that the country requires measurable progress in addressing insecurity.

It emphasized that ensuring the safety of citizens is a constitutional responsibility of government and urged leaders to rise to the challenge of effective governance.

While expressing concern over the security situation, the council commended members of the armed forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices and commitment in confronting security threats across the country.

The group also called for greater transparency in the management of security funds, arguing that citizens deserve accountability for resources allocated to defence and intelligence operations.

Furthermore, it urged authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, deploy modern technology, improve border security, enhance collaboration among security agencies, and encourage greater community participation in efforts to combat criminal activities.

The council concluded by calling for decisive and competent leadership to address the nation’s security challenges and restore public confidence.
