The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind the nationwide strike action embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), calling for the immediate rescue and release of all abducted pupils, students and teachers across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the labour union described the strike as a justified response to the worsening insecurity facing teachers, students and educational institutions nationwide.

The NLC said the action reflects the determination of teachers to draw attention to the growing threats confronting the education sector and the urgent need for stronger security measures.

The Congress commended the leadership of the NUT for initiating the nationwide protest, noting that the safety of teachers and learners must remain a priority for governments at all levels.

Expressing concern over the increasing cases of kidnapping and attacks targeting workers, the labour body said teachers, health workers, local government employees and other public servants have become vulnerable to criminal activities in different parts of the country.

The NLC also voiced concern over the plight of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, describing the situation as deeply troubling and a reflection of the broader security challenges facing the nation.

According to the union, insecurity has evolved into a nationwide crisis that requires urgent and coordinated action from government and security agencies.

The Congress warned that it may organise solidarity actions with teachers and other workers if authorities fail to demonstrate greater commitment to tackling insecurity and protecting citizens.

It noted that previous advocacy efforts, protests and engagements on security concerns have yet to produce the desired results, citing continued incidents of kidnappings and mass abductions in several states.

While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, the NLC urged governments at all levels to move beyond assurances and implement concrete measures to safeguard lives and property.

The labour union concluded by demanding the immediate rescue and release of all persons currently held by kidnappers, stressing that Nigerians deserve to live, work and learn in safety.

The call comes amid growing nationwide concern over recent school abductions and attacks on educational institutions, with stakeholders demanding stronger security measures to prevent further incidents.
