A wave of grief has swept across Ogudu following the death of the community’s revered traditional ruler, Nojeemdeen Fashola.

Palace sources confirmed that the first-class monarch died peacefully in the early hours of Thursday at his residence in Ogudu, bringing to an end a reign that many residents described as impactful, peaceful and deeply rooted in service to the people.

Although details surrounding the exact circumstances of his death were not officially disclosed, palace officials stated that the monarch “departed this world in peace,” a development that has thrown the ancient community in the Kosofe Local Government Area into mourning.

Since news of his passing emerged, residents, community leaders, market men and women, youth groups, traditional chiefs and sympathisers have continued to troop to the palace to pay their respects and offer condolences to the royal family.

The atmosphere across Ogudu has been sombre, with many residents describing the late monarch as a father figure, peacemaker and custodian of culture who devoted his reign to the unity and progress of the community.

In line with Yoruba traditional customs and rites, several commercial and social activities within the town were reportedly reduced as a mark of honour for the late monarch. Markets operated at low capacity, while community members gathered in groups to reflect on the life and legacy of the traditional ruler.

Oba Fashola ascended the throne about four years ago and quickly earned admiration among residents for his humility, accessibility and calm approach to leadership. During his reign, he was regarded as a symbol of unity and stability in Ogudu land.

Community members recalled that the monarch consistently promoted peaceful coexistence among residents and played active roles in resolving disputes within the community. His leadership style was often described as inclusive, with many residents saying he maintained close ties with both the elderly and the younger generation.

Beyond his traditional responsibilities, the late monarch was also known for supporting developmental initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of the people. Residents said he encouraged community participation in matters relating to security, education, youth development and cultural preservation.

Traditional chiefs in the community also paid glowing tributes to the monarch, describing him as a respected custodian of Yoruba culture and traditions whose wisdom and leadership would be greatly missed.

Many residents expressed shock over his passing, noting that the monarch remained committed to the affairs of the community until his final days.

As tributes continue to pour in from within and outside the community, preparations are expected to begin for traditional burial rites and other ceremonies associated with the passage of a revered Yoruba monarch.

The death of Oba Fashola is widely seen as a significant loss to Ogudu and the larger traditional institution in Lagos State, with many residents praying for peace and strength for the royal family and the entire community during this period of mourning.
