A Ukrainian drone strike on Monday reportedly hit the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant complex in southern Ukraine, resulting in the death of a transport worker, according to the site’s Moscow-installed administration.

The Zaporizhzhia plant, the largest nuclear facility in Europe, has remained a major point of tension since it came under Russian control in 2022, with both Russia and Ukraine repeatedly accusing each other of actions that could endanger nuclear safety.

Plant authorities said a driver was killed when a Ukrainian drone struck the transport section of the facility. They also confirmed that the plant is currently in a cold shutdown state and remains near the front line of the ongoing conflict.

Separately, Ukraine’s state nuclear operator reported that the plant briefly lost its external power supply, forcing it to rely on emergency systems for about an hour and a half before restoration. It described the incident as part of a series of repeated disruptions that have raised concerns about nuclear safety risks in the region.

Officials further warned that such repeated power interruptions increase safety concerns not only for Ukraine but for neighbouring countries as well, given the potential consequences of any nuclear accident.
