The Transmission Company of Nigeria has reinforced the national grid with the commissioning of new transmission line connections in the Ihovbor corridor, a move aimed at improving power evacuation and enhancing overall grid stability.
The project features turn-in-turn-out connections linking the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission lines, which were successfully brought into operation at about 7:05 pm on Wednesday, April 23, 2026.
This development is expected to significantly boost the evacuation capacity for electricity generated by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and Azura Power plants. By improving transmission capacity, more generated power can now be efficiently delivered into the national grid.
Current figures indicate that the Ihovbor/Benin transmission line is already transmitting approximately 200 megawatts, while the Ihovbor/Ajaokuta line is carrying about 90 megawatts. These additions are projected to reduce congestion along the corridor and improve the reliability of electricity supply to connected regions.
The company described the project as a major milestone in strengthening power evacuation from the Ihovbor generating plant and enhancing the stability and performance of the grid. It also noted that the new infrastructure will help minimise transmission constraints that have previously affected efficient power distribution.
The upgrade forms part of broader efforts to expand and modernise Nigeria’s transmission network in response to rising electricity demand. By improving grid capacity and resilience, the initiative is expected to support more consistent power delivery and contribute to the overall efficiency of the country’s power sector.
