Police operatives in Ondo State have arrested two suspected human traffickers over the illegal movement and exploitation of a 21-year-old woman, Akinwunmi Faith, who was taken to the Côte d’Ivoire under false pretences.

The suspects, identified as Akinlaja Blessings and Johnson Ahomari, are currently in custody and are assisting investigators with efforts to unravel the trafficking network. Authorities confirmed that a third accomplice, simply identified as Grace, is still at large, with ongoing efforts to locate and apprehend her.

Investigations revealed that the victim was lured with promises of legitimate employment as a salesgirl in a supermarket abroad. However, upon arrival in Côte d’Ivoire, she was reportedly forced into prostitution and subjected to harsh and degrading conditions.

According to findings from the investigation, the victim endured severe physical and psychological abuse. She disclosed that traffickers allegedly administered substances to her and other victims, believed to be used to manipulate and control them while they were being exploited. The conditions in which she was held were described as inhumane, with limited freedom and constant coercion.

In a dramatic turn of events, the young woman managed to escape from the brothel where she was held. She reportedly navigated through a bush path to reach a nearby town, where she was able to contact her family and seek help.

Police authorities confirmed that the case was initially reported by the victim’s mother at a divisional police station in Okitipupa. Acting on the complaint, detectives launched an intelligence-driven operation that led to the arrest of the two suspects.

Following coordinated efforts, arrangements were made to safely return the victim to Nigeria. Upon her arrival, she was immediately taken to a specialist hospital in Okitipupa, where she received urgent medical care and psychological support due to the trauma she experienced.

Law enforcement officials have assured that investigations are ongoing, with a focus on dismantling the broader trafficking syndicate responsible for the crime. Authorities say the suspects in custody will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.

The police have strongly condemned the act, describing it as a grave violation of human rights and dignity. They reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and holding all perpetrators accountable.

Members of the public, especially parents and guardians, have been advised to exercise caution and thoroughly verify job offers or travel opportunities, particularly those involving relocation abroad. The police also encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly, emphasizing that community cooperation is vital in the fight against human trafficking.

Authorities reaffirmed their resolve to protect vulnerable individuals and to intensify efforts aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
