The Federal Government of Nigeria has entered into a new agreement with the United Kingdom to facilitate the return of Nigerian nationals who have failed to secure asylum, as well as convicted offenders.
The development was confirmed by the UK Home Office on Thursday, following President Bola Tinubu’s recent official visit to the UK.
Under the agreement, individuals whose asylum applications have been rejected and who have exhausted all legal avenues for appeal will be repatriated to Nigeria. This category currently includes hundreds of Nigerians who have been deemed ineligible for refugee status under UK immigration laws.
In addition, the deal covers Nigerian nationals convicted of crimes in the UK, with authorities preparing for their return as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen migration control and bilateral cooperation.
The arrangement will also apply to individuals who have overstayed their visas, providing a structured process for their return to Nigeria.
Officials say the agreement is part of broader efforts by both countries to manage migration more effectively while reinforcing diplomatic and security ties.
