Authorities in the United Kingdom have announced road closures and temporary airspace restrictions ahead of the state visit of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is expected to arrive next week.
The visit, scheduled to begin on March 18, will see the Nigerian leader hosted by Charles III at Windsor Castle. President Tinubu will be accompanied by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
Security agencies said several measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth and secure visit. According to Thames Valley Police, permanent airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle will be extended on the day of the visit from 7:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.
Officials explained that the temporary restrictions are part of broader security arrangements surrounding the high-profile event.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of the police force’s Joint Operations Unit said the airspace limitations form only one aspect of a comprehensive security operation.
He noted that the police have extensive experience handling security for royal engagements in Windsor and that significant planning has gone into preparations for the visit.
Authorities warned that any breach of the airspace restrictions would be treated as a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could result in arrest.
Security deployment during the visit will include specialised search teams, mounted units, armed officers, and road policing personnel, alongside neighbourhood policing teams. Surveillance systems such as closed-circuit television and protective vehicle barriers will also be used to enhance safety.
Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Meanwhile, road closures and parking restrictions are expected to take effect from March 17, with temporary traffic disruptions anticipated in and around Windsor throughout the visit. Aviation authorities are also working with police to enforce the flight restrictions, including regulations on drone operations during the period.
