The driver charged in connection with the car crash that injured heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua and claimed the lives of two of his friends has appeared before a court in Ogun State.
The defendant, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was driving Joshua and his associates, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, when their Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck along a highway in the Sagamu area of the state. Ayodele and Ghami died at the scene, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.
Kayode is facing multiple charges bordering on reckless driving and driving without a valid licence.
He appeared briefly before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Tuesday. Dressed in dark clothing, the defendant avoided interaction with journalists as he arrived at the court premises.
Speaking after the proceedings, Anthony Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, questioned the necessity of the trial, noting that accidents can occur anywhere. He, however, acknowledged that public opinion within the community favoured prosecution, with many believing that over-speeding played a role in the crash.
Preliminary investigations by traffic authorities indicated that the vehicle was allegedly travelling at excessive speed and suffered a tyre burst before the collision.
The case was adjourned to February 25 after the prosecution requested more time. Kayode’s counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, said the defence did not oppose the adjournment in the interest of justice.
Kayode had reportedly served as Joshua’s driver for about three years prior to the incident, with no previous complaints recorded against him.
