The Nigerian gospel music community has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned gospel singer and evangelist Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known and fondly referred to as “Omije Ojumi” after her hugely popular song of the same title.
Her passing was announced on Tuesday through an official statement released on social media on behalf of her family. The statement confirmed that the gospel artiste died on January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.
The announcement, which was accompanied by a photograph of the late singer and a brief video clip celebrating her life and ministry, expressed deep sorrow over her passing and prayed for her eternal rest.
“With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, who passed away on January 12, 2026, in a Lagos hospital. May the Almighty grant her eternal rest,” the statement read.
The message was signed by Olawale Akinnaanu on behalf of the family.
While the family did not disclose the cause of death, the late singer had in recent months drawn public attention after requesting prayers over a health challenge affecting her leg. The development had generated concern among fans and members of the Christian community who followed her ministry closely.
In October 2025, a video circulated showing Akinnaanu during a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, seated with one leg stretched out on a chair as prayers were offered for her healing. During the service, a cleric spoke about persistent bleeding in the affected leg and described the condition in spiritual terms.
However, there has been no official confirmation linking the ailment to her eventual passing, and the family has not released further medical details.
Bunmi Akinnaanu was widely admired not only for her distinctive voice but also for her deep spiritual conviction and emotionally charged style of worship. She began singing at a very young age, developing a passion for gospel music that later became the foundation of her life’s work and ministry.
Before fully embracing gospel music, Akinnaanu pursued a career in banking, where she worked for several years. Despite the stability of her professional career, she eventually made the bold decision to leave the banking sector in order to dedicate herself entirely to gospel music and evangelism, a choice she often described as a divine calling.
