The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu was absent or unable to perform his duties, emphasizing that he remains fully engaged in governing.
This response from the party followed comments by Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate for the 2023 presidential election, who questioned the president’s presence in light of Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson for Lagos State, Seye Oladejo, the APC declared that President Tinubu continues to fulfill his constitutional obligations both domestically and internationally.
Oladejo called on political actors to focus on essential issues rather than public appearances, stressing that governance cannot be measured by the frequency of public appearances or media presence.
“The president is neither absent nor unavailable,” he stated. “He is actively involved in the complex work of governing, including policy coordination, security oversight, diplomatic relations, and economic reforms,” the statement read.
According to the APC Party spokesperson, a leader’s performance should be judged by the decisions made, the measures implemented, and the results achieved in the national interest.
He added that Tinubu continues to govern decisively and consistently, guided by the mandate of the Nigerian people, and that his actions are driven by national priorities, not political considerations.
Oladejo stated that the government remains active on multiple fronts, including economic reforms, security coordination, and international diplomacy, with the goal of guiding Nigeria toward sustainable growth and global influence.
He advised political leaders to contribute constructively by proposing solutions and alternatives that promote national development, rather than addressing issues that might upset the public.
Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, had previously expressed concern about President Tinubu’s whereabouts, citing the deteriorating economic situation, insecurity, and what he perceived as the president’s lack of direct contact with the people.
In a post on his verified X account on Monday, Obi claimed that President Tinubu spent 196 days abroad in 2025 and accused Nigerians of not having heard directly from the president since December 2025.
As a reminder, President Tinubu traveled from Lagos to Europe on December 28 to spend his year-end vacation and prepare for an official visit to the United Arab Emirates.
The President arrived in Abu Dhabi on Sunday at the invitation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to attend Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, which began on Monday.
