No fewer than 38 senior officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), including an Assistant Commandant-General (ACG), were dismissed by the Federal Government in the outgoing year over various offences.
The dismissals, which were approved by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) under the Ministry of Interior, followed findings of gross misconduct, insubordination and other violations of extant laws and service rules.
The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Babawale Afolabi, disclosed that a total of 76 senior and junior personnel of the Corps were subjected to different disciplinary measures during the year for acts considered unbecoming of officers.
According to him, 20 junior officers were dismissed from service, three were demoted by one rank, while seven others received warning letters. Among senior officers, two were demoted by two ranks, one was demoted by one rank, and five were issued warning letters.
Afolabi said the disciplinary actions were taken in line with recommendations of the NSCDC Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee and the Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee, as approved by the CDCFIB and in accordance with the Public Service Rules.
He explained that offences considered included job racketeering, extortion, aiding and abetting illegal dealings in petroleum products, fraudulent practices, gun running, absence without leave (AWOL), and other acts of gross misconduct.
The NSCDC spokesperson added that the Commandant-General of the Corps, Prof. Ahmed Audi, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to sanitising, revamping and repositioning the Service through sustained training and retraining of personnel.
According to Afolabi, the Commandant-General stressed that the Corps would not tolerate any conduct capable of tarnishing its image, and urged officers and men to remain focused on discharging their statutory responsibilities in line with government expectations.
