President Bola Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trip to South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit as he awaits crucial security briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, in Kwara State.

The President also ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area, directing the police to track down the bandits responsible for the attack. This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the President’s directive followed a request from the Kwara State Governor.

Presidency sources told our correspondent that Tinubu chose to remain in Abuja to receive first-hand reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi State on his behalf, and from security agencies on both incidents before embarking on his foreign engagements.

Tinubu was scheduled to travel to South Africa today for the 20th G20 Summit and later proceed to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit.

“Disturbed by the security breaches in Kebbi State and Monday’s attack by bandits against worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, President Tinubu decided to suspend his departure,” Onanuga said.

“He now awaits reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima… as well as reports from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the attack in Kwara.”

The President restated his directive to security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the 24 schoolgirls abducted by bandits.

On Tuesday night, Tinubu instructed the Vice President to visit Kebbi State following the abduction of 25 students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, and the killing of the school’s Vice Principal.

Tinubu expressed sadness over the incident, despite earlier intelligence alerting security agencies of a possible attack.

The Zuru Emirate area was thrown into mourning Monday after armed bandits invaded the Maga school in the early hours, killing the Vice Principal, Hassan Makuku, who reportedly attempted to protect the students. The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed that 25 students were abducted.

The President also extended condolences to the Nigerian military over the death of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other soldiers killed by insurgents in Borno State.
