President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Super Eagles to put Sunday’s World Cup playoff disappointment behind them and shift full attention to the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President encouraged the team to “focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations” after Nigeria narrowly missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive cycle.
Nigeria’s hopes ended in Rabat after a tense encounter finished 1-1 in extra time, with the Democratic Republic of Congo winning 4-3 on penalties to advance to the Inter-Confederation play-off.
Despite the painful exit, Tinubu praised the players for their determination throughout the qualifiers, noting that they showed courage and commitment, especially after winning the first leg of the playoff.
“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” he said.
The President also called for a thorough review of Nigeria’s football structure, urging administrators, coaches, players and stakeholders to identify and address the weaknesses that undermined the qualification campaign.
While acknowledging the disappointment felt by millions of fans, Tinubu stressed that the forthcoming AFCON—scheduled for January to February 2026—offers a chance for immediate redemption.
“Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory,” he said, rallying the team to prepare adequately and aim for a strong, purposeful outing in Morocco.
