The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a strong security advisory to American citizens ahead of a major protest expected to take place in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday, October 20, 2025.
The demonstration, which is being organized under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is anticipated to draw a significant crowd to Eagle Square and the Central Business District in Abuja. The organizers have described the march as a peaceful movement aimed at demanding the release of detained activist Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to the embassy, the protest—though intended to be non-violent—could potentially disrupt normal activities in the capital, with the possibility of road closures, traffic congestion, and clashes between protesters and security forces. As a result, the embassy has urged all American citizens to take the warning seriously and exercise maximum caution.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that demonstrations are expected on Monday, October 20, 2025, in and around Eagle Square and the Central Business District. While the protest is planned to be peaceful, there is potential for unrest or confrontation with law enforcement,” the alert read.
In light of this development, the embassy advised Americans in Abuja to avoid the protest zones, limit movement around the city, and stay informed through reliable local news sources. It also suggested that children remain home from school and that domestic staff who commute from outside Abuja should not report to work on that day for safety reasons.
Furthermore, the advisory emphasized the importance of maintaining a low profile and being particularly cautious in public areas such as shopping malls, cinemas, markets, and places of worship. U.S. citizens are also encouraged to review their personal security arrangements, have emergency contacts readily available, and keep their mobile phones fully charged in case of urgent communication needs.
The embassy reiterated its commitment to the safety and well-being of U.S. citizens residing in Nigeria, urging everyone to remain vigilant, stay indoors where possible, and avoid large gatherings or demonstrations that could quickly turn unpredictable.
