University Non-Academic Staff Set for Nationwide Protest Over Unmet Demands
Non-academic staff in Nigerian universities have declared a one-day nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025. The protest is being organized jointly by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee (JAC).
The planned protest follows what the unions describe as the continued failure of the Federal Government to respond meaningfully to their long-standing demands. A joint emergency meeting has been called across all university branches for Wednesday, October 8, to mobilize members for the protest. Activities will include protest marches on campuses, public display of placards highlighting their grievances, and press briefings.
The decision to protest comes after a comprehensive review by JAC on October 6, assessing the government’s inaction despite several ultimatums.
Among the key issues raised are the alleged unfair disbursement of N50 billion in Earned Allowances, delays in the renegotiation of the 2009 agreements with the unions, and the non-payment of outstanding salaries for two months. Other grievances include the non-payment of arrears related to 25% and 35% salary adjustments, as well as unpaid third-party deductions from May and June 2022 salaries.
The unions had initially given a seven-day ultimatum on September 15, which was later extended by 14 days, expiring on October 6. Despite the establishment of a Joint Consultative Committee by the Federal Ministry of Education to address the concerns, union leaders report that only two meetings have been held, with minimal progress.
In an official circular dated October 6, the leadership of NASU and SSANU instructed all branches in both federal and state universities to fully participate in the Thursday protest. The memo emphasized the importance of strict compliance and active participation to push their demands forward.
The protest is expected to cause significant disruption across university campuses nationwide, as non-academic staff prepare to press for their rights through peaceful demonstration.
