The Niger State Government has urged residents living along the River Niger and River Kaduna to relocate to safer areas immediately, following the release of water from major hydroelectric dams.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), water is being discharged from the Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jebba dams at high volumes, raising the risk of river overflow and extensive flooding in surrounding communities.
NSEMA Director‑General Abdullahi Baba‑Arah warned that the affected rivers could soon breach their banks. He advised communities in flood‑prone areas to move to safer grounds that have already been identified.
Residents were also cautioned to avoid activities near riverbanks during the rainy season, stay away from substandard structures, and not shelter under trees during storms, as violent winds are expected toward the end of the season.
Baba‑Arah confirmed that flooding has already caused damage to homes, farms, bridges, and roads in several local government areas located both upstream and downstream of the dams.
The affected LGAs include Lavun, Magama, Rafi, Kontagora, Gbako, Mokwa, Lapai, Katcha, Agaie, Suleja, Shiroro, Mashegu, Agwara, Bida, Edati, Munya, Bosso, Chanchaga, Paikoro, and Wushishi.
He said that assessments of the flood’s impact are ongoing, and periodic updates will be shared. He also called on traditional institutions, community leaders, stakeholders, and media outlets to assist in disseminating the safety advisory to residents.
