The Federal Government has approved plans to develop new eastern and western electricity grids as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s recurring power grid collapses.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this at an energy conference in Lagos, stating that the government was preparing to begin the procurement process. He said Nigerians could begin to see the benefits of the projects within two to three years.
Tegbe explained that the government had commenced a nationwide technical audit of electricity infrastructure to identify faults, determine urgent repair needs and prioritise investments. He said the exercise would help ensure that resources were directed towards the actual causes of transmission failures.
The minister identified ageing infrastructure as one of the major challenges facing the power sector, noting that some transmission towers and lines dated back several decades.
He added that the government had divided the country into three energy zones to guide its interventions, with particular attention to major demand corridors, including Lagos and Abuja. The administration aims to use the audit findings to guide repairs and improve the reliability of electricity transmission.
