Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has criticised the club’s hierarchy for failing to strengthen the squad sufficiently during the summer transfer window following their 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
The Argentina international defended manager Michael Carrick, insisting that responsibility for the club’s poor results should not rest solely on the coach and players. He called on the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, to invest more in the squad to improve United’s competitiveness.
Martínez acknowledged that the players needed to improve but argued that stronger recruitment was necessary to compete against top European teams. He also questioned the club’s tendency to focus on changing managers whenever results decline, urging the hierarchy to examine other areas of its operations.
Reacting to the defender’s comments, Carrick said he had not watched the interview and declined to comment, noting that emotions could run high after a disappointing defeat. He, however, maintained that the players remained united and committed to improving results.
