Amnesty International Nigeria has raised concerns over escalating bandit attacks in parts of Niger and Zamfara states, saying hundreds of residents have fled their communities and abandoned their homes and farms.
In a statement on Tuesday, the human rights organisation said the attacks had affected communities around Rijau in Niger State and parts of Zamfara, forcing residents to flee for safety. It warned that farmers were also abandoning their farmlands as the harvest season approaches, threatening livelihoods and food security.
Amnesty International accused the Nigerian authorities of failing to adequately protect rural communities from armed groups, noting that gunmen had killed hundreds of people in northern Nigeria since 2018.
The organisation warned that continued violence and mass displacement could trigger a humanitarian crisis, urging the government to take urgent action to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of lives and livelihoods.
