Medical and health workers at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have embarked on a 72-hour warning strike following the alleged stabbing of a medical laboratory scientist by a patient’s relative within the hospital premises.
The strike began at 11am on Monday and is expected to end at 8am on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The Joint Action Committee of the unions identified the injured worker as Lawal Toheeb Olasunkanmi, saying the industrial action was intended to show solidarity with their colleague and compel management to address security concerns.
A medical laboratory scientist at the facility, Oladejo Abdullahi Abiodun, said he received a distress call on Sunday evening about the incident and rushed to the hospital, where he confirmed that his colleague had sustained stab injuries to the head.
The unions are demanding a clear policy against violence, threats, harassment and physical assault on healthcare workers. They also called for an urgent meeting with management to identify security gaps and establish measures, with specific timelines, to protect staff.
The unions participating in the strike include the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals and other health-sector labour groups.
As of the time of reporting, the hospital management had not publicly responded to the strike notice. It was also unclear whether the alleged attacker had been arrested or whether the police had begun an investigation.
