Nigerian troops have repelled a large-scale attack by Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, fighters in Kukawa, Borno State, reportedly neutralising more than 25 terrorists.
The attack was launched from four different directions against troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion. The military responded with ground forces supported by the Nigerian Air Force, forcing the terrorists to retreat.
Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Mohammed Goni, said preliminary assessment showed that more than 25 terrorists were neutralised, with 14 bodies recovered so far. Troops also recovered weapons and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles.
Goni said further operations were underway to recover additional weapons, track fleeing fighters and prevent them from regrouping.
He also disclosed that some soldiers were killed during the encounter, describing their sacrifice as a testament to their service to the nation. The Army said the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated air and ground operations against terrorist activities in the North-East.
