More than 1,000 Islamic clerics have urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his plan to seek re-election in the 2027 presidential election, citing economic hardship, insecurity and the migration of skilled professionals.
The clerics made the call in a communique issued after a national conference in Kano titled, “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections.”
They criticised some of the administration’s economic policies, including the removal of petrol subsidy, changes to the naira exchange-rate regime, electricity tariff increases and tax reforms, which they said had worsened the hardship faced by Nigerians.
The clerics also expressed concern over killings, kidnappings and terrorism, particularly in the North-West, and called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to improve security.
They said Tinubu should reverse policies they described as harmful and provide relief to citizens. The clerics warned that if the government failed to address the concerns raised, Nigerians should reject the President’s candidacy in 2027.
The conference also raised concerns over the migration of doctors, teachers, engineers and other skilled professionals. The clerics urged the government to improve salaries and working conditions and create incentives for skilled Nigerians abroad to return and contribute to national development.
They further called on voters to assess candidates in the 2027 elections based on competence, integrity, experience and policy proposals rather than political, ethnic or regional affiliations.
