The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has given the Federal Government 14 days to release funds for the implementation of the 2026 agreement and pay outstanding salary arrears, threatening to shut down universities if its demands are not met.

The union, at its 56th National Executive Council meeting in Akwa Ibom, demanded payment of outstanding arrears under the 2026 FGN/SSANU CONTTA salary structure, effective from January 1, 2026. It also called for payment of two months’ withheld salaries from the 2022 industrial action and one-year arrears from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim said Education Minister Tunji Alausa had assured the union that the funds would be released on or before next week. He said the payment would avert the threatened action, but warned that the 14-day ultimatum remains in effect if the government fails to fulfil its commitment.
